(Text in English below) In oktober ging tijdens het Architectuur Film Festival Rotterdam (AFFR) de documentaire A Plan for Paradise (2023) in première. Deze film vertonen we i.s.m. studievereniging AnArchi TU/e en Natlab op woensdag 22 mei a.s. De Finse documentairemaker Kati Juurus volgt hierin het Finse architectenbureau Helin&Co dat een stad voor 600.000 inwoners gaat bouwen in een vallei buiten Kathmandu. Na het winnen van de prijsvraag gaan de architecten aan de slag. Wat volgt is een cultureclash tussen de georganiseerde, westerse manier van denken en het kleinschalige, traditionele Nepalese leven. Juurus legt op soms hilarische wijze de diepgewortelde verschillen bloot tussen deze twee werelden, en toont de hardnekkige pogingen van de Finse architecten om orde scheppen in de schijnbare chaos van een onbegrepen cultuur. Maarten Willems, als universitair docent verbonden aan de TU/e, verzorgt het nagesprek (in het Engels).

In October 2023, the documentary “A Plan for Paradise” had its premiere at the Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam (AFFR). On Wednesday, May 22, we will be showing this film in collaboration with the study association AnArchi TU/e and Natlab. The movie, directed by Finnish filmmaker Kati Juurus, follows the Finnish architectural company Helin&Co as they embark on building a city for 600,000 people in a valley near Kathmandu, Nepal. After winning the competition, the architects begin their work, but soon find themselves facing a culture clash between the organized, Western style of thinking and the small-scale, traditional Nepalese way of life. Juurus’ film exposes the deep-rooted differences between these two worlds in a sometimes hilarious way and shows the persistent attempts of the Finnish architects to create order in the apparent chaos of a misunderstood culture. The aftertalk will be hosted by Maarten Willems, a university lecturer at the University of Technology Eindhoven.
